The weekend had finally come and I was ready to get it in. It had been a long week of back-breaking labor and my two little days of freedom were long overdue. Out of respect for the neighbors, I turned down the stereo system as I pulled in front of Peanut's house. Tonight was to be a night of stunting, and my beater was not going to get the results that I was looking for. My mom must have been in a good mood because I usually got a flat out NO if she thought the conversation was even leading to me being seated behind her woodgrain steering wheel. For whatever reason she happily tossed me the keys on the conditions that I filled up the tank and took the car for a spin through the car wash, although I did leave out the part about Peanut.

My mom absolutely hated Peanut. Even though we grew up together she thought he was a bad influence…whatever that means. Nevertheless, I have my own mind and make my own decisions. She was crazy to think that I was dumb enough to let someone run me. So, by omitting Peanut's name, I avoided the argument. It was like taking candy from a baby. I agreed to her conditions, put my seat belt on as she watched from the window, and as soon as I was out of her sight I plowed down on the gas.

As usual, Peanut wasn't ready when I arrived so I opted to sit in the car. After about ten minutes, Peanut finally emerged from the brick three-flat.

"Awwwwww weeeee!," Peanut squealed, with his right fist up to his mouth. I sat nonchalantly leaning back in my mother's plush ride.

"Man, your mom let you use the ride tonight?" Peanut shouted, jogging up to the truck. He stopped in his tracks. "Wait…! Does this mean you have a curfew? Do you have to be back home by ten?" he said joking.

"Whatever, Man!" I yelled back, but giggling to myself as his statement was half-true. Peanut hopped in and clapped his feet together before closing the door.

Earlier that day I had gotten a text invite to one of the hottest clubs in the city and I couldn't wait to get there. In the club, Peanut and I were the shit. Nobody could resist our swag. Not to mention that Peanut was known in the streets. He always knew somebody that could land us in the V.I.P. and tonight, with my mother's ride; we were bound to have a record-breaking night.

I turned onto Stony Island and headed south to get onto the expressway. Peanut flipped through the tracks of our favorite mix CDs until he found a track that had enough base to cause a mini earthquake. I tried to gun the gas a few times, but traffic was heavier than usual for a Saturday night. I didn't pay it much attention until I had no choice but to slam on the brakes.

"What's going on!" I shouted in frustration.
